Last checked October 2026. No sponsors, no affiliate links, nothing to buy. How we pay for this

ChatGPT has parental controls, and they are free. There is no Plus requirement, no add-on and nothing to buy — both accounts are free and every control below is included.

The whole setup takes about fifteen minutes. Most parents put it off for weeks thinking it will eat an afternoon; the putting-off is always the expensive part.

Do this with your teen, not for them

The settings matter less than your teen watching you set them. Alone at midnight you have configured an account; together, you have set expectations.

One thing this does not cover: what your kid's school allows. That is a separate conversation, and the two are often different.

The five account settings

  1. 1
    Create the account together

Go to chatgpt.com and click Log in — the same box signs you up. Your teen needs their own email address — a personal Gmail is cleanest, not a school account, because the school controls that one, not you. They do not need access to that inbox; the email only exists so they can log in. Do not use “Continue with Google”: that makes the Gmail password the ChatGPT login and you lose the separation. Sign up with email: ChatGPT emails a code to that address, and you type it in to keep going. ChatGPT requires 13 or older, so use their real age.

  2. 2
    Add custom instructions

Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions, then add: “I am a high school student. Keep responses clear and at a high school reading level. Do not write complete essays for me — help me think through ideas instead.” Adjust for your kid's age. This is the highest-leverage free setting, because it shapes every conversation from here forward, and the essay line is a nudge toward using the tool well rather than a restriction.

  3. 3
    Set up the profile

In the same box, add a nickname — a first name is plenty, no last name needed. Hit Save. Then, while you are still in Settings, turn off Voice Mode too.

  4. 4
    Decide about memory

Settings → Personalization → Memory. With memory on, ChatGPT learns from conversations over time. For younger teens, consider starting with it off; for older teens using it for schoolwork, on is fine. Off first and on a few months later is a reasonable order while you are still learning how they use it. Once the accounts are linked, this control moves to your side under Parental Controls.

  5. 5
    Have the first conversation together

Do not hand over the mouse and walk away. Do the first prompt as a team and ask “can you show me how you'd use it?” Ten minutes of watching tells you more than any amount of monitoring. This is the handoff moment.

Linking parental controls

These are free at every tier. You both just need ChatGPT accounts.

From your own account: Settings → Parental Controls → Add Family Member, then enter your teen's email or phone number. They get an invitation, waiting for them the next time they log in to ChatGPT, and have to accept it — both sides say yes before any control applies.

  • •Quiet hours
  • •Reduced sensitive content
  • •A voice mode toggle
  • •An image generation toggle
  • •A toggle for whether their chats train the model
  • •Study hours — set times when ChatGPT works through problems with them instead of just answering
  • •Safety alerts if OpenAI sees signs of serious risk to your teen, or if the account is shut down for threats of violence

What the controls do not do

You cannot read your teen's chat history. These controls set limits, hours and filters and alert you when something may be wrong — they do not hand you a transcript. That is the design, and it is worth knowing before you promise yourself otherwise.

Your teen can also unlink the account at any time, and you get a notification when they do. Have that conversation before the setup rather than after it.

Your kid might say
“Can you see what I'm talking about?”
What's really going on
This is the question that decides whether the setup reads as a trap or as a rule. It usually comes within a minute of linking, and the honest answer is narrower than what they are imagining.
Say this
“No. I can set hours and filters, and I get an alert if something serious comes up. I can't read your chats. That's how it's built, and I wouldn't do it behind your back anyway.”

One thing that changed recently

ChatGPT now estimates a user's age from how the account behaves. If it decides the account belongs to someone under eighteen, it applies teen protections whether or not you have linked anything. Treat that as a floor rather than a substitute — the controls you choose are still the part you choose.

Three things to do today

  • •Do the five account settings today, not this weekend. Fifteen minutes, no plan needed.
  • •Link the accounts: Settings, Parental Controls, Add Family Member. Five minutes, and free.
  • •Tell your teen what you changed, the same day you changed it. The setup only works if it is not a secret.

Common questions

Are ChatGPT parental controls free?

Yes. They are free at every tier and there is no ChatGPT family plan to buy. Any page telling you these cost money is wrong.

Can I read my teen's ChatGPT conversations?

No. The controls set limits and send safety alerts; they do not give you a transcript. A tool that does that is a monitoring app, which is a different thing entirely.

What age does ChatGPT require?

Thirteen or older. Use your teen's real age at signup — it is what drives the teen protections.

Should I use my teen's school email?

No. The school controls a school account, not you, and the link between your two accounts is the step the rest depends on. A personal Gmail you create and hold the password for is cleaner.

What happens if my teen unlinks the account?

They can, at any time, and you get a notification. That is a reason to agree the setup out loud beforehand rather than to hide it.

The bottom line
Five settings, one account link, fifteen minutes, all of it free. And if you only do one thing, make it the first conversation — the settings can be changed later, the precedent you set the first time cannot.
